Key definitions: ID, DD, Autism, and SU

These four terms are often used interchangeably but mean different things. Click each tile to read a clear, plain-language definition.

Four levels of intellectual disability

Severity is about support, not IQ

ID severity is described by the level of day-to-day support a person needs — not by an IQ score alone. Click each level for what it means in everyday life and in substance-use work.

Diagnosis examples

Common diagnoses across the IDD/A spectrum

Each tile opens a short, clinical-friendly description. These are examples — not a complete diagnostic list.

Etiology

Genetic causes and risk factors

Genetic factors account for 25–50% of IDD/A cases, and advances in genetic testing now suggest that up to 80% may have identifiable genetic contributions. The examples below are the most frequently encountered in practice.
